Bandits kill government official in Zamfara, a businesswoman

Gunmen suspected of being bandits killed two travelers along the Zamfara road.

The incident happened on Sunday evening and those killed include Kaura Namoda local government area engineer and works manager Umaru Nabita Moriki and a local businesswoman identified as Hajia Rumba Jengeru.

The armed men reportedly “opened fire on travelers on the Kaura Namoda-Moriki-Shinkafi road”.

A former sole administrator of the Shinkafi local government area was also caught in the attack but escaped with minor injuries.

The incident comes weeks after bandits killed 13 people, including a mother and her baby in Randa, Dansadau district of the Maru local government area.

Deadly attacks raged in Zamfara state where bandits thrived.

The state’s farming and herding communities have long been terrorized by gangs that loot villages, steal livestock and kidnap residents for ransom.

In 2019, the state government struck a peace deal with the gunmen.

About fifteen brand new Hilux vehicles and cash gifts were also given to the leaders of various “repentant” bandit gangs by the governor in 2020.

But despite all of this, communities across the state are still under attack and residents kidnapped and / or killed.
